R. Judson Mitchell
Professor Emeritus

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of R. Judson Mitchell, a former faculty member and Emritus Professor of Political Science at the University of New Orleans. His obituary, which appeared in the Times-Picayune on March 31st, 2006, is copied below. He will be missed.

R. Judson Mitchell, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of New Orleans, died at his home Saturday, March 25, 2006 after a short illness. He was 73. Born in Wake County, North Carolina, Prof. Mitchell graduated from Wake Forest College and then received a master’s degree from Yale University. After serving the U.S. Army in Japan, he earned his Ph.D. from Notre Dame. He was an Assistant Professor at Emory University and then, in 1968, moved to New Orleans to Assume the post of Professor of Political Science at the University of New Orleans, where he served until his retirement in 2000. He was also a fellow of the Hoover Institution of Stanford University. Prof. Mitchell was the author of three books on the Soviet Union, Ideology of a Superpower, Getting to the Top in the U.S.S.R, and Russian Politics: The Struggle for a New Order. He authored numerous articles on Soviet and European politics and one novel, Immerman.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Lacinak Mitchell, his son, R. Judson Mitchell, Jr., a grandson, R. Judson Mitchell, III, a step-granddaughter, Charlotte Fournier, a daughter-in-law, Lois Elliott, and by several nieces and nephews.
