The Social Science Research Laboratory serves as the research lab for social science departments. It provides research training for graduate students, data and research support for faculty and students, and facilities for the UNO Poll. At the Social Science Research Laboratory, students are given access to internet-connected personal computers. The Lab offers several state-of-the-art statistical programs to choose from, such as STATA, SPSS, and SAS, Microsoft Office XP Professional, which includes graphics and word processing programs. The lab offers faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates enrolled in research courses several important resources. The lab staff can help students find datasets appropriate for many research topics. Through the University of New Orleans' affiliation with the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), students can select from thousands of datasets. Data are available in all social science subfields on subjects ranging from the latest American National Election Study, to the emergence of democratic attitudes in post-Soviet Russia, to the role of women in third world countries, or to roll call voting in the United Nations. Students also may conduct research using data from the UNO Poll which conducts national, statewide, and local polls. |
